As well as the emotional and physical support that people may require when someone close to them is approaching death, there are several legal and/or official issues that may also have to be considered, such as making a will, advanced directives, power of attorney, planning a funeral.
The range of emotional, physical and practical issues that bereaved people face are considered in the booklet When a Loved One Dies, produced by the Hospice Friendly Hospitals programme. Immediately following a death there are number of official procedures that may need to be considered, including the requirement of a post mortem if the death was unexpected.
To help families meet the additional costs they may incur at this time, the Department of Social and Family Affairs have various payments available for people who have been bereaved. Citizens Information provides specific information on entitlements related to death and bereavement.
