CARING AT END OF LIFE - SUPPORTING CARERS IN THIS COMPLEX AND DIFFICULT JOURNEY -  SEMINAR REPORT.

The Irish Hospice Foundation in partnership with Care Alliance Ireland hosted a seminar on 20th June 2011 for professionals involved in supporting family and friends who are caring for someone nearing end of life.  The aim of the session was to provide an initial forum to discuss the issues that present for health and social care professionals supporting this group of carers, as well as outlining existing supports and resources that are available for them in their work.  The Report Report on Supporting Family Carers at End of Life.pdf (2.87 MB, Adobe PDF) of the outcome of the seminar is available for download. CARERS COUNT in the CENSUS

The April 2011 Census provided a unique opportunity to quantify the unpaid work of Carers and for the first time include Family Carers under 15 years of age. Defining.doc (0.03 MB, MS Word)   On examining the results of the earlier Census in Northern Ireland and the UK, we are convinced that Carers in Ireland are under-represented in our Census 2006.  The gap is mainly in the group of carers who are also in paid employment and under-age carers, though there is also a deficit in the full-time carer numbers.  Specifically we PatnerOrganisations.doc (0.16 MB, MS Word)  asked you to alert as many people as possible about Census Question 22 Census Question 22.doc (0.31 MB, MS Word) .  Accurate answers to Q22 depends on recognising the profile of carers and what Q22's "Unpaid Help" refers to and accurately counting their hours of caring per week.  Click for further information information.pdf (2.04 MB, Adobe PDF)   and resource material ResourceMaterial.doc (0.28 MB, MS Word) .

LINKS AND PUBLICATIONS

Family members and friends of people who have a life limiting illness often carry out caring tasks for their loved one, however they often do not recognise themselves formally as a carer. As well as providing advice and information, these organisations and contacts listed here also have support groups, training and education opportunities, and approach their service and information provision from the perspective of a carer.

Isolation, lack of social contact and uncertainty regarding how to be of assistance to their loved one are often identified by the family members and carers of people with a terminal illness. Often it can be difficult to find time or energy to make contact with people, groups or organizations that may be able to provide the support you and your loved one needs during difficult times.
